I have version 2.0.05.25150. I am using my laptop which has Windows XP. I have Sonic Stage 4.3 as well, and have downloaded the Gracenote patch. Everything was working fine and then one day, simple burner would no longer recognize a CD when inserted. I insert a CD and it spins briefly and that's it. No search for the album or tracks, just nothing. If I go to the configuration TAB on Simple Burner I see nothing entered as the target drive. It is just blank. I cannot, however, enter a letter to tell it where the CD is. The box just stays blank. I assume the failure of Simple Burner to know where to see a CD is the problem but since it won't let me steer it in the right direction, I am stuck. If I use Sonic Stage I can upload CD's without a problem. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

And as a follow up to the above, I rebooted and opened and closed Sonic Stage then reopened Simple Burner. Now the CD drive does appear in the configuration box as "D:" in Simple Burner but otherwise the problem remains. Nothing happens. It doesn't seem to know that I have put a CD into the drive. It does recognize the MD player hooked up to the computer, so it isn't locking up.

(obvious) question: does the CD drive play music and DVDs without reference to Sony/SonicStage/MD? Note that reading DVD and reading CD is accomplished by two different lasers, and ONE of them may be bust. At least, that's what happened to me. Drives are cheap now, likely replacing the drive is the answer.

Stephen: Well, it wasn't obvious to me. But yes, I just tried playing a CD and it works normally. I did notice that now the "D:" drive is blank again in the simple burner configuration window and it won't let me add it. So I'm back to that again. Thanks for your idea.

I'd suggest running some Nero drive data/music extraction tests, if you have Nero. I'm wondering if something reorganised your drivers for the CDROM?

You'll have to find the device map (turn on "show hidden devices") and have a look and see if anything looks odd.

If I had to guess, I'd say the mapping of physical driver to letter is messed up. Get rid of the CD, and delete anything that looks right for CD in the device map. Reconnect the CD drive, and see if that doesn't fix it. Probably right to reboot after deinstalling it.

If there's configuration for SB, it will be stored in (maybe) an ini file or (more likely) the registry. Someone here must know this already. Maybe you have to clean that configuration up, assuming there really is no hardware error.

But if you have a spare drive I would be inclined to swap it in.

Can your CD read data as well as music?
